The holidays can sometimes be an overwhelming time of spending, high expectations and confused social roles (Who do you actually have to buy gifts for? Is the shopping list getting a bit ridiculous?) and of course, that lingering feeling of “Oh cr*p, another year has passed and I still haven’t/shouldn’t have/wish I would have…” type doubts that creep in as the calendar year comes to a close.
Knowing that the holidays can be totally sparkle and depressingly lackluster in the same breath is exactly why I wanted to do a “Week of Gratitude” this year. If you want to reconnect with something deeper to really enjoy the holidays without sweatin’ the small stuff or panicking on what shade of winterberry would be perfect for your table runner (and other really superficial but validly stressful things we fret over this time of year), let’s take a minute to just be…grateful.
Grateful for the homes we have- even if the windows are drafty and our housemates drive us bonkers.
Grateful for the health we have- even if this year had some physical setbacks we didn’t plan on.
Grateful for the wealth we have- especially if we feel like we’ll never have “enough,” we have something to count on.
Grateful for the people in our lives- you know, those folks that drive us bananas, but if they were gone tomorrow would make our hearts ache.
Grateful for the wonderful stories and memories of 2013- the good, the bad, the ugly and the hilarious. It’s OUR story. We own it and it’s a gift we were given one more year.
