Neon is not something I’ve been excited about since I was nine. Back then, my wardrobe consisted of oversized cartoon shirts tied with scrunchies, puffy painted shoes and a few key bangles and plastic cocktail rings. (Of course, I had no idea what cocktails even were back then!)
I was nervous about how my skin would look sporting neon- In my days of “color wheel” training, where you test different colors on your skin to see if you’re a warm or cool tone, where does neon come in? Would I look ridiculous or could I pull it off?
Considering that I got not only a ton of hearts on Instagram (see the photo to the left) and the outfit was man-boy approved, I will consider it a win.

I wore this outfit originally with long pants and chunky hot pink sandals I scored on HauteLook, but after getting an impromptu date to visit the lakeside to watch fireworks (and the fact that it was hot) I switched it up to something a teensy bit more cool in temperature if not in color!
So here’s my original look before adjustments were made for the heat and beachyness.
Frugal Fashion Hint: If you want to incorporate neon into your summer wardrobe, buy one top to see how you like it. Pair it with any brights your already have- shoes, bags or accessories.
Neons can also be paired with khaki/nude as seen here or just pair it with some jeans to keep it simple.
Use what you’ve got & make your neon addition either the center of attention or part of a whole bright look!
That is so cute! I usually go for accessories like belts and shoes to incorporate neon. And of course the first place I look is thrift stores! Love your blog:)
I’m obsessed with lime green right now. You have no idea. It has to be the right shade of lime green, but it goes with so much that’s already in my wardrobe. I will just pair brights with brights or brights with a neutral. Very cool!
I still don’t have the guts to try neons- I have incorporated a few bold colors into my wardrobe that are bright but not neon. I need things with a longer shelf life than “one season” to keep expenses down but am still going beyond neutrals, blacks and jewel tones.
I have tried a few bright purples and a few teal pieces but someday hope to walk on the wild side!
