Mother’s Day is right around the corner, what better way to celebrate than with a Sephora Gift Card Giveaway paired with some sage advice from the many mothers in my life!  I’ve been very fortunate in my life to have many motherly mentors who have offered me their wisdom on beauty, life, career and love.  In honor of mother’s everywhere, enjoy some of my favorite tidbits and a fabulous giveaway from Coupons.com!

Appreciate Your Beauty Now, You’ll Treasure It When You’re Older

My Gram was a beautiful woman, but she told me that she would often cut her face out of the pictures because she absolutely hated the way she looked.  I vividly remember her telling me, “If I knew then what I knew now, I would have treasured my looks.  I didn’t realize how beautiful I was, I can’t believe how cruel I was to myself.”

Of course, this isn’t just advice about aging-  I believe you are beautiful at any age and you become refined with age, not old.  Work with what you’ve got, appreciate it, and flaunt what God gave you so no matter what!  We’ll always be picking ourselves apart- whether it’s acne, baby weight, wrinkles or age spots- if we look, we’ll always find problems until those problems are swapped out for something else.  Love what you’ve got, it’s a treasure

Always Show Gratitude, Write Notes Often

Vicki was a motherly mentor to me-  during my years working with her in a non-profit service organization for young girls, she not only instilled class in all the young women she worked with, she lived it.  I was always impressed by how impeccably polished she was- even if we were on a camping trip, she always seemed to have a crisp outfit planned that was picture perfect.

Vicki was a modern day lady, but what stood out for me the most was her aptitude for gratitude.  She taught me that saying thank you, frequently and from the heart was a key to success.  Even more so- she instilled in me the love of stationary and the art of writing a genuine thank you note, which is becoming a lost art.  I can’t tell you how many times a blessing has doubled for me, or heck, I just felt relationships flourish, because I took a quick minute to write a thank you note or make it a point of saying thank you.  If you need more abundance in your life, take a moment to be grateful and you’ll find it- thanks Vicki!

Take A Chance On Love, Nothing In Life Is Certain But Feeling Regret For Chances Not Taken Is A Sure Thing.

Another bit of wisdom from my Gram is about love.  When she was a teenager, she fell in love with a boy named Danny. They wanted to be together, but in those days (We’re talking the 1930’s) even being from different churches, (not just different religion) was taboo in her conservative town.  Her love was worried about being disowned by his family if he dated outside the Catholic faith, and they ended their romance.  Years and years later, the two reconnected and still had regrets on what could have happened if they’d taken that chance.

I recently made the choice to move back to Chicago for love.  While doomsday scenarios ran through my head of disaster, broken promises and humiliation if I were to take a chance and fail- Gram’s story of not taking a chance stuck with me more.  You’ll never know where love will lead, but choosing to ignore it surely leads to regret. Her story still sticks with me!

You Need The Right Foundation, Blush & Lipstick- But You’re Not Dressed Without A Smile.

One thing I’ll always remember about Dianne, a dear friend and motherly mentor of mine, was her smile and laughter. I can still hear her laughter though she’s been gone for a few years now.  A few years back, I was preparing for a big conference and we were in San Francisco killing some time at the local shops.  We stepped into a beauty shop and started browsing makeup- and she told me she would treat me to some new colors so I’d feel extra confident when I presented my speech later that week.

She and I got makeovers from the beauty staff and I learned a great lesson that day- you can pick the most beautiful shades, opulent colors and perfect foundations, but true beauty isn’t found in a bottle. Put on the right lipstick but always pair it with a smile- especially if you’re not in a particularly smiley mood.  Beauty is amplified by a smile.  I treasure our makeover day and her gifts, but I’ll always adore her gorgeous smile, it taught me that a genuine smile is one of woman’s most precious assets.

I completely agree that a smile makes a HUGE difference! I *try* to smile even when I feel grumpy or whatever and even just faking a smile for a few seconds helps me to remember what I am grateful for and forget about my grumpiness.

The best advice my mo ever gave me is to wear sunscreen. Both my mom and grandmother have the most amazing, youthful skin, and it’s the daily sunscreen regimen that keeps them that way. If I can look like them at their age — that’s a drop in the success bucket.

The best advice I ever received was from my aunt. I was explaining to her how I had finally found my true love (I was 16, I think) and we were going to get back together and she asked me why we broke up to begin with. I started making excuses for him and she gently told me that if he were my “true love”, I wouldn’t need to make excuses.
