Crafting Your Own Fashion – A Frugal Fashionista’s Guide

September 6, 2011

Craft Your Own Clothes! DIY fashion is pretty awesome I love fashion, I am also terribly broke at times.  As a grad student living in the big city, I have found that whenever I need a new accessory but am low on cash, it is wonderful to be able to reach into my stash and grab a skein of yarn and whip up a headband, scarf or crochet a flower to be pinned to a jacket.

If you’re broke and needing to both be entertained and simultaneously revamp your wardrobe, crafting your own fashion  might be a good option for you.   Sewing machines, notions, fabric, yarn and sequins can be found cheap if you swap with friends, peruse thrift and vintage stores or scavenge yard sales.  Modifications to your clothing can be made without any craft supplies whatsoever- DIY fashion is highly unique and doesn’t have to be expensive!

Recycle Old Clothes

Even if you’re not terribly crafty or don’t want to pick up a new skill, being able to embellish existing pieces in your wardrobe:
painting your own tanks, sewing on buttons or ribbon rosettes or doing a quick snip to an old sweatshirt can totally change the look and feel of old pieces you’re tired of.

  • Knitted/Crocheted headbands for winter

I'm always crafting for others as gifts, but I forget to craft for myself when I want to add a little spice to my wardrobe. Thanks for sharing these inspirations!

I'm thinking that the sweatshirt DIY above is going to make it's way into my project pile very soon!

Oh, Oh, Oh! I love the crochet finger-less gloves. I might have to learn crocheting just to make some of those. I love to customize my clothes and accessories but not too much, I'm more of a less is more fashionista. These are great ideas!

Thank you darling! Lionbrand.com has great free patterns for both knit and crochet,s so I'm sure you could find something you absolutely love in either form! 🙂 I like to keep things simple myself, with a few pieces I love that are easy to swap out if I get bored but are classic and versatile! Thanks for stopping by!

  13. Hey just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your post seem to be running off the
screen in Ie. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with internet browser compatibility but I thought I’d post to let you know.
The design look great though! Hope you get the
    issue solved soon. Thanks

so you can click on it as you are working. The worksheet also includes other financial
