Attention Target Fashionistas! Target Introduces “The Shops”

January 16, 2012

If you’re a budget fashionista, Target is the place for you.  With Target’s prices and moderately mainstream sensibility I’m able to afford some experimentation and whip up new looks.  I’m not sure if you’ve been following the Target collaborations of lore, but they have done some awesome team-ups with Issac Mizrahhi, Anna Sui and soon-to-be some adorable pieces by Jason Wu.  Being a Target fashionista has never been so good.

Of course, you have to recall the cray-cray collab of Missoni with Target that sparked an Ebay frenzy with pieces selling out within hours and the website collapsing in on itself like the death of a supernova.

Yes, as much as I adore Target and their attempts to make a discount department store totally fun, stylish and affordable- I really hope that their new endeavors in 2012 to couture up the place will not be a measure of American social depravity…let’s leave our fashionistas OFF the evening news, k?

That being said- in addition to the Jason Wu collab of February 2012, Target is teaming up with a bunch of small businesses to launch nation-wide initiatives called The Shops.

I am not sure how to feel about this.  Yes, the stuff will surely be adorable, but I’m wondering if scaling up a small business’ production line is feasible.  I am skeptical that a small mom-n-pop business that produces dog treats can maintain the quality and homelyness that made them famous- but maybe that’s not the point.

So, what do you think?  Will these just be Target-esque products with designer/small biz labels popped on them, or do you think this is a big-biz innovation?  The jury’s still out at FruBu.

  1. I love Target, but I tend not to shop there for anything other than basic T-shirts or socks. I've found that for the same price, I can pick up a dress or sweater on sale or at a discount store that is usually of better quality.

Ya- I think it has appealed to me a bit more since I moved to Chicago…where I live is a "cool store" desert and other than grocery stores, there isn't much in this neck of the urban woods. Target has everything I need in one place and during the semester when I just need a new pair of tights and a pack of beer for a last minute get together it's been a savior!

I like the idea that Target is supporting small businesses. If those businesses play their cards right they can really blow it out the water!

I like target for super trendy items…you know things I can wear once and throw away when the trend goes.

I have found the cutest scarves and cocktail rings at Target for $10 or less. I like to build my wardrobe on staples that are high quality and then add some cheapy accessories that won't break your heart if you lose an earring or a gem falls out of a ring. I got a HUGE heart ring there and totally adore it but wouldn't have purchased it (since it's so obnoxious/huge but adorable) otherwise but the price was right to experiment!

I just about passed out at the awesome things in the Target stores vs Target here and the prices!!!

In fact now my best friend is living there I plan on buying stuff and shipping it to her and she will send it on to me. It is STILL cheaper with that postage than buying here.

Kylie- I still cannot believe the price differences between here and Australia, I still want to fall over when I think that even a discount department store still has "store brand" items for double the price of what we pay here. I just cannot wrap my brain around it!

I think this is a great idea, but I hope it goes more smoothly than the whole Missoni collection debut at Target. That was crazy!
