Are You Afraid Of Aging? Tackling Age, Beauty & Fashion w/ Advanced Style

June 7, 2012

I cannot tell you how much I adore Advanced Style– I saw this clip after reading their blog for a few months and knew I had to share.  In an ageist society, women spend youth sucking it in, popping diet pills, trying to make ourselves up while tearing ourselves down.  If we’re not worried enough about being how we look like now- we’re terrified of what it will be like to get old.

But what is “old”?  29? 39? 59?

“Old” seems to be a moving goal post that follows us wherever we go-  causing just enough anxiety that we can’t treausre who we are.  What I love about the women featured in Advanced Style is that just because our bodies change -it doesn’t mean our beauty has to.    Some of these women have more style & refinement in their pinky finger than I have in my entire wardrobe.

Beauty doesn’t diminish- it evolves.

Advanced Style proves that we can challenge what and who are considered “beautiful” and that style doesn’t have to be relegated to the younger crowd.  Additionally, I give them major props for reminding all of us that diversity doesn’t diminish with age-  older folks are not a homogenous group with one style & one experience- they truly are unique individuals who once cultivated the styles we copy now- they should be taken seriously for their fashion sense!

Time is the one thing you can’t stop.  Embrace the wrinkles, the spots, the cellulite & the “imperfections.”  Discard the ideas that aging means you lose parts of yourself or have to turn in your audacious fashion for kitty sweatshirts & elastic wastebands (unless, that is, you want to, then rock on!)

So, how has your fashion & body image evolved over time?  What women in your life have inspired your style?

It feels like as soon as I hit 30 every thing started falling apart, no I’m kidding! Seriously though, I don’t know if it was part of the 30 factor or me just having a 30’s crisis but I did start to notice the fine lines. But I am trying to embrace it but be a little bit more proactive with my skin care. But I love your post and the clip. Keep em coming.

Other than using a better moisturizer and making sure I use sunscreen I haven’t made many changes as I entered my 30s. Now at 33 I feel more confident than ever. I wear what I like and what makes me feel good. Gone are the days where I stressed about whether or not I was wearing the right thing or had my hair the right way. I do what works for me. If I feel like I look good, that’s enough for me.

I sure could have saved a ton of money in my 20s if I had figured it out sooner!
