Frugal Feature: Tips to Find the Best Mattress at the Right Price

August 5, 2018

The following frugal feature is a guest post from a third party.

Buying and owning a new mattress isn’t simply down to picking the one that you think looks best to fit your bed frame. Mattresses aren’t on the market to help with your home décor; they provide a far greater service than many people appreciate!

Mattress market is flooded with an array of options, so finding the one to suit your needs can be a little like seeing the wood through the trees. If you’re seeking a new mattress because of an issue, such as back or neck pain, then it’s especially important that you get the right one for you.

These tips are here to help you make a reliable, educated choice on the best mattress at the right price:

Do your research before you go shopping

Before you go out and grab the first mattress you come across, try these two helpful resources that will help to provide you with information that is useful for in your hunt for the right mattress for you:

Speak to your doctor

If you dealing with a health condition, it’s always a good idea to speak with your doctor or physical therapist in regard to what they would recommend you do to alleviate the problem. While doctors aren’t mattress experts, they are well equipped to give advice on your medical condition and symptoms.

Don’t get sucked into the gimmicks

Some mattress sellers out there will give mattresses the orthopaedic classification or state that they are medically-approved on the label. However, there’s no medical organisation that gives official certification to mattresses that would allow them to place these labels on them.

While mattresses can offer orthopaedic-friendly features, no medical group will have has verified this.

Test out your new mattress

One of the best things about shopping for a mattress is getting to lie on it in the shop! Go shopping when you have a nice chunk of time available as you should ideally be lying on the mattress for 10 to 15 minutes at a time.

Take your time and don’t concern yourself with others around you; this is an important purchase and you should feel confident in your choices. Also, if you’re a couple looking for a new mattress, you should test out the mattress together.

Firmness doesn’t always mean the best option for you

You may well think that the really firm mattresses are the best ones in terms of support and promotion of good sleep, but some research reveals that the best mattress for low back pain is, in fact, a medium firm mattress and not a firm one.

There is a difference between firm support and firm feel, so remember that you aim is to have firm support with a comfortable feel. The comfort is determined by your own, personal preference.

Do you really need a pillow tops mattress?

Unless you weigh enough to warrant a big thick pillow top mattress there’s not really any need for you to buy one. You’ll need to be heavy enough to compress the foam to even get near touching the underlying support system, so don’t be swayed into them unless it fits your requirements.

Adjustable beds are a great option

You don’t have to be an OAP to look at buying an adjustable bed. Do you feel comfortable sitting in a recliner? Is it comfier than lying down? If so, give an adjustable bed a try.

These beds give you the option to elevate your head and knees slightly which can act to relieve pressure on the lower back.

Check the warranty

For any good mattress on the market, it will come with a minimum of a 10-year full replacement or non-prorated warranty. Therefore, don’t settle for less and if you’re not happy, move on.

Choose a shop that specialises in mattresses

You’re making a sound investment, so don’t go purchasing a new mattress anywhere other than at a reputable bed and mattress store.

When you go into these shops you’re almost guaranteed to get help from a salesperson who has a wealth of knowledge, training and understanding of your needs when it comes to successfully picking the best mattress for you and your sleep.

Ideally, you want to visit a store that has a range of brands so that you can test out the difference and not be restricted to choosing between the options from one particular brand.

Lastly, you should remember that it’s your mattress, your health, and ultimately your money being spent, so it’s well worth taking the time to research the right mattress for you and getting the best mattress you can.
