Conscious Box Review & Happy Belated Earth Day!

April 23, 2012 By: Shannyn Category: Beauty + Makeup + Skin Care, Health/Wellness, Reviews

So, the audio in this clip drives me bonkers (or you know, makes me want to cry..whatevs!)  It’s happened a couple of times where the recording on my MacBook pro doesn’t quite match up with the audio and in the past I’ve caught it and re-recorded.  Well, this time I didn’t catch it in time (it seems to line up in the beginning and end, not in the middle, wth.)

I enlisted the help of a friend over the weekend to fix it but to no avail- so I’d suggest you just close your eyes and let the soothing voice of your favorite frugal vlogger take you away to a peaceful place with this video review.  You can imagine me in crazy outfits or maybe doing this review while perched atop a stallion- whatever works for you.

So what’d I think about the Conscious Box?

Go-Green Challenge from Alice.com {Week 3}

April 16, 2012 By: Shannyn Category: Shopping

So, what did I think of Alice.com? Three words: love, love, LOVE. Not only did they have the eco-friendly brands I love, but the prices were a win and the convenience factor was superb. Again, three words: Win, Win, Win. I have my Alice.com account set up to remind me about my regular purchases (like paper towels, kibble for Ralph, tissues and toiletries), and shipping is free with orders over $40. It really makes living frugally a possibility.

So often when you try and save money you lose out on time since saving money can be a pain in the tush- not so with Alice.com! I loved that everything was shipping super-quick and I didn’t have to lug bulky and heavy items home from the big-box store.

Go-Green Challenge from Alice.com {Week 2}

Alice.com Review

This week, I took Alice.com up on their Go-Green challenge and scoured their site for eco-friendly products and organic snacks.  I was so excited to find that they had a huge array of Method, Seventh Generation, Annie’s Organics and a ton of other products with eco-friendly options for everything from cleaning products, to feminine care to pet products.  I was psyched!

What I loved about Alice.com was the fact that I could get everything I needed for myself, the apartment and Ralphie-Pug that was eco-friendly and competitively priced. PLUS, I got free shipping straight to my door!  Me=one happy camper.

My Alice.com Haul= Toilet Paper, Paper Towels, 2 boxes of tissues, kitchen trash bags, 2 jugs of eco-friendly bleach, disinfecting wipes and organic tampons from Seventh Generation.  2 bottles of laundry detergent from Method, eco friendly doggie bags, eco-friendly dog foot (wet & dry), 3 bottles of kombucha, Annie’s organic granola bars, VZ immunity drink mix, St. Ives Apricot Scrub, Liquid Plumbr (not eco-friendly but a last minute emergency…our sink needed help!)   Plus, they threw in a wonderful bag of extra goodies…shampoo samples from Nexus and some pasta!

Whenever I go shopping, I always find that it’s hard to find the products I’m looking for and then, I have to lug them all the way home on the train.  Not only was I thrilled at the eco-friendly offerings, but the fact that I could get them affordably priced and shipped straight to my apartment without lugging them for blocks sealed the deal for me.  I placed my order Sunday night and it was here by Tuesday, so when I’m running low on essentials like toilet tissue or face wash, Alice.com really delivers on turnaround time!

Alice.com offers free shipping and uses eco-friendly packing fill!

When you place your order, you have the option of setting when you’ll need a reminder to restock an item.  If I know I typically need toilet paper every month, I can set reorder alerts to simplify my shopping.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve taken the train to Target and reminded myself “YOU MUST NOT FORGET TOOTHPASTE” only to get all the way there, stock up on everything else I needed, and forgotten the one thing I needed.  I love that Alice.com is wired so that I don’t run out of products but also to help remind me on orders that I need to restock the essentials I buy.

So all in all- Alice.com simplified my shopping & saved me money and time, I’m honestly impressed!  Since delivery was so cost-effective and simple I stocked up on the bulky and heavy things that are a pain to lug home:  Paper towels, eco-friendly bleach and laundry detergent,  organic kibble for Ralph & of course, some organic snacks for me.

I was uber impressed with the variety of options when it came to organic, eco-conscious offerings from Alice, and the turnaround time was phenomenal.

Go-Green Challenge from Alice.com {Week 1}

April 02, 2012 By: Shannyn Category: Shopping

Alice.com reviewMy-oh-my how I do love a challenge, especially when it involves shopping!  I recently got an invitation to participate in a Go-Green Challenge from Alice.com in honor of Earth Day.  (OH, and when you use that link you’ll get 20% off your first order!)

Y’all know how much I hate lugging home heavy groceries and supplies from the store.  Any time I can have bulky, heavy items delivered like dog food, laundry detergent or bulky items like toilet paper delivered, I do.

I’d like to say that going car-less is “green” but really, taking public transportation saves me green- it’s just such a hassle to find the brands I want at my local grocer 4 blocks away and lug it home, the experience is usually a big, huge hassle.

My biggest frustration is running out of the “everyday” items- paper towels, garbage bags & liquid detergent and bleach simply because I can’t carry it all home and don’t always get to the big-box store every week by train.  The thought of simplifying my “essentials” shopping will be an exciting opportunity!

Here’s a bit about Alice.com:

Let’s face it; you can probably think of a thousand things you’d rather do than drive to the store again and again for toilet paper, toothpaste, trash bags and the dozens of other home essentials that keep your home running. We can too. That’s why we started Alice.

The Internet has changed the way we shop for things like books, clothing, shoes and electronics. We buy online for the convenience and the power we have to get product reviews, choose brands, see price comparisons, and make better choices.

But when it comes to home essentials, we still trudge off to the store, load up the cart, and haul a trunk-load of stuff out the parking lot. Why? Because no one has come up with an efficient, cost-effective way to buy these goods online. Until now.

Last week, I checked my closest grocery store (it’s a small family owned store) and I couldn’t find much of anything that was going to do either- be green or save green.   I’m excited to try Alice.com to see if it can help me simplify my shopping while finding earth-friendly products I’ve been unsuccessfully trying to lug home!  They extended me a $150 shopping credit to do just that!

I’ll be curious to see if Alice.com offers the brands I want and eco-friendly options I crave.  I’m already excited at the prospect of having the products delivered and cutting down on the normally un-fun portion of my shopping trips to the store, so I’ll be curious to see what they have to offer.  My challenge is to buy eco-friendly home products & snacks, and I’m ready for it!

Earth Day is April 22nd, do you do anything to be more eco-friendly?  Do you have any tips for me?

Join me back here next week when I share my Alice.com haul & I how I’ll put my eco-friendly products to use!

As a frugality blogger, I often am moved to ask-  ”WHY SO SERIOUS?”  when people take their couponing to the extreme and execute their money saving tactics with military precision…which I like to a point but not when it totally is un-fun.
